I understand you are sick but…

November 27th, 2006 by Pavlina

I am a grownup. This means that when I am slightly under the weather, I drag my sorry butt into work. When I am feeling worse than that I drag my sorry behind into work when needs be. Needs be would be when if thee is a crisis at work or i must go in or the world will end. Needs be is not when I need to check my email or write a report or whatever else that I can do from home logged inot my VPN. If I am really sick, too sick to say I am working from hoe becasue I will not be working from home but lying huddled under my duvet praying the kids won’t come into the room, I take a sick day.

I realize that sick days are these valued commodities. At my company we do not have sick days. We get this PTO for the year. PTO (Paid time off) covers your sick days, your vacation days, your I-don’t-want-to-go-into-work days. If we don’t use our PTO days by Jan 31, we lose them and we can only cash in five days worth, so it really behooves one to use them already.

My office is currently undergoing renovations. This means there are three of us crammed into an office roughly 15 by 15 square feet. My co-worker is hacking, sneezing, coughing, phleghming, snorking, wheezing, and spitting not six feet from where I am sitting.

He is doing email.

If I get this cold and take it home and my family gets sick I will wish him bad Karma indeed. That is just so wrong.
